Princeton Elementary School
Orlando, Florida
Project Overview
Rhodes+Brito was selected to provide architectural and engineering services for the renovation of a two-story, 41,000 square foot historical landmark classroom building originally constructed in 1926. This project include a 437-seat auditorium. The existing building is approximately 28,000 square foot and was designed by noted Orlando architect Howard M. Reynolds. Its unique style of simple Mediterranean-style detailing, massing and proportion stemmed from Mr. Reynolds’ collaboration with other architects of that era to design structures that truly shaped Orlando.
Princeton Elementary is located on a six acre site located in the heart of the College Park neighborhood of Orlando. The small site presented multiple challenges to the design team. Many large oaks played a key role in the placement of the planned additions as well as the historic structure, vehicular and bus circulation and the geometry of the site. As a result of a small urban site, retention was dealt with via an exfiltration system.
The project features a single-entry point for the campus; improved site lines to improve student safety and site security and a courtyard for multiple school and community activities. Technology and Audio upgrades for the existing Reynolds Building as well as the planned additions and a new Central Energy Plant were added. Renovations to the parking areas included improved vehicular circulation; on-site queuing of vehicles and Separate bus loop. Other renovations included covered canopies, an outside dining area, and an art patio.
