Downtown Orlando Library – Fourth Floor Renovation

Orlando, Florida

Project Overview

Tour iconic Orange CountyPublic Library, downtown was constructed in a brutalist architectural style, unique to ourCity and highly recognizable. The raw concrete texture and deep insets of the exposed waffle slab systems are the features composing the language of the interior. Downtown patrons have come to identify and love these design elements. Over the past decade, our library has truly transformed into a community and media hub for the City Where patrons can not just attain knowledge in every medium, but can be exposed to art, cultural and educational events, and production and promotional tools for personal gain. Essential To the project goal was to carry consistent design language from other library levels using quality finishes like terrazzo and I2I carpet system, accommodating new technologies and give this floor a unique and updated feel. The major goal of this renovation project was to enhance essential visual connections between the information desk and overall floor while creating a comfortable environment for computer research stations.

A new display case and focal ceiling element are strategically placed to screen arriving patrons at the elevator lobby from the open computer area. The lighting design highlights the iconic waffle slab ceiling and provides destination cues with multi-sized suspended LED rings. A 46” multi-planed pendant is a beacon over the information desk.

This updated but integrated design for floor 4 provides a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing environment with future flexibility for our very vital OrangeCounty Public Library, a unique building with timeless appeal.
